Why did you decide to study abroad? I’ve lived in Washington my whole life and I experience life in a new place! I also wanted to study Chinese and connect with my heritage.

What were your expectations going into the program? I really didn’t know what to expect! Southwestern China is so different from eastern, coastal China which I had visited before, I didn’t know what life was going to be like.

What about your experience was surprising to you? I was surprised by how quickly I was able to pick up language and style of life: there are many things in China that are different from the US (toilets, food culture, university life) and I found myself adapting to these new situation surprisingly easily. I was also surprised by how many crazy things I did in China that I wouldn’t dare to do here, such as take a 80km bike ride in a day.

What was your favorite food while you were abroad, and why? Dumplings, because they were homemade in a tiny little room on the bottom floor of an apartment complex on campus, they were super cheap, and the waitresses would humor my Chinese.
