Support OMSFA
The Office of Merit Scholarships, Fellowships and Awards (OMSFA) helps UW undergraduates develop the tools and personal insights necessary to match their goals with local and national merit-based scholarship opportunities.
What do students have to say about their experience applying for scholarships through the OMSFA?
The most valuable part of the process for me was the constant support and encouragement that I received from [OMSFA]. [They] helped me along every step of the application process. I would strongly encourage anyone who is trying to apply for the Udall to contact [them].
Donna Neagle, 2008 Udall Scholar, 2006 Mary Gates Leadership Scholar

The most intense process for me was writing the personal statement. Not only are you supposed to write about yourself, you have to condense what’s unique or impressive about you and your life story, your career goals, your ambitions, etc. into 1,000 words or less. But the Office of Merit Scholarships, Fellowships and Awards worked really hard with me to polish those essays, at night and even over the weekend. The Office of Merit Scholarships, Fellowships and Awards is like a hidden treasure chest of opportunities. If more students understand the valuable support and services that [they] offer, more will make use of them to advance their potential and opportunities.
Vi Nhan, 2008 Rangel Scholar, 2006 IIPP Fellow, McNair Scholar
I would definitely recommend [students] seek the guidance of a counselor to help them go over the application. Sometimes the applications are very complicated, and it helps to have an experienced eye explain exactly what the 'judges' are looking for... It's very tricky to write professionally about oneself, and it takes a lot of guts, and a lot of humility and creativity to do it well. I know firsthand the kind of doubts that can prevent people from applying for scholarships…The UW staff are an excellent resource! Don't let self-doubt stop you from applying!
Elizabeth Green, 2007 Marshall Nominee
