2009 Critical Language Scholarships for Intensive Summer Institutes
In 2009, over 5,400 applicants from universities across the country applied for 525 Critical Language Scholarships for Intensive Summer Institutes scholarships. From this highly competitive pool, 12 UW undergraduate students were selected to participate:

- Ryo Kato, International Studies, Intermediate Korean
- Kathryn Koerschner, Asian Studies, Advanced Korean

- Ann Koler, Asian Studies, Intermediate Bangla
- Emma Lux, Anthropology, Beginning Punjabi
- Steven Margitan, Economics & International Studies, Advanced Chinese (pictured at middle right as Santa in Chengdu, China)
- Daren Moon, Asian Studies, Beginning Bangla
- Nathan Snyder, International Studies, Advanced Chinese
- Rachael Stovall, Public Health, Beginning Arabic (pictured at bottom right at little Petra in Jordan)
- Jordan Swarthout, International Studies, Intermediate Russian
- Kristen Zipperer, International Studies, Beginning Urdu

All program costs are covered for participants. This includes travel between the student's US home city and program location, pre-departure orientation costs, applicable visa fees, room, board, group-based intensive language instruction, program-sponsored travel within country, and all entrance fees for program activities.
