Ronald H. Brown Undergraduate Commercial Service Fellowships

Description

The Ronald H. Brown Undergraduate Commercial Service Fellowships program provides talented undergraduates with an international and domestic public service education. Professional work-study and practical classroom experience in global economic policy train Fellows for successful entry into the Commercial Service as tomorrow's U.S. commercial representatives. Selection takes place in alternate years.

The program pays tuition, room and board, travel, and mandatory fees during the junior and senior years, as well as during the first year of graduate study, including reimbursement for books. Participating schools provide financial support in the second year of graduate study based on need.

Eligibility

Eligibility requirements include the following:
  • Only United States citizens will be considered.
  • Applicants must be in the sophomore year of undergraduate study or with a three-year graduation date.
  • Applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale at the time of application.
  • A cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale must be maintained throughout participation in the program.
  • Applicants must demonstrate financial need. Have extracurricular/community/volunteer activities and leadership Roles in these activities.

Procedure

The complete FAF application packet consists of an official application form and all supporting documents (personal statement, Employment Data Form; SAT Form; certification of citizenship; two letters of recommendation; official academic transcript and financial aid transcript). Students are selected based on the following criteria:
  • Strength of undergraduate course work; Economic Status (demonstrate financial need); College Honors and Awards; Extracurricular/Community/Volunteer Activities and Leadership Roles in these activities; and Personal Statement.
  • Consideration will be given to qualified applicants who, in addition to outstanding leadership skills and academic achievement, demonstrate financial need. The number of fellowships will be determined by available funding.
  • Finalists will attend an interview session in Princeton, NJ or Washington, DC. Transportation will be paid to the interview site.
  • Inductees will attend an Orientation in Washington, D.C.
  • Medical and security clearances will be required for program participation.

Service Agreement

Each successful candidate is obligated to serve a minimum of four and a half years in the Commercial Service. Candidates who do not successfully complete the program and the Commercial Service entry requirements may be required to reimburse the U.S. Department of Commerce.
