Description

Each year, deserving students interested in becoming journalists receive more than $100,000 in NABJ scholarships. NABJ annually awards several $2,500 awards and a $5,000 scholarship to college students and graduating high school students.

Eligibility

Competition for the scholarship is open to any African American high school senior who will be a freshman in the fall and will attend an accredited four-year institution. The student is eligible for renewal for three years providing the student:
  • Majors in print journalism
  • Maintains a minimum grade point average of 3.0
  • Works with the campus newspaper
Grants will be awarded upon proof of enrollment in school. All scholarship winners must be members of NABJ before the grants are awarded.

Procedure

To ensure your application is ready to be submitted, have an instructor or counselor review your package to confirm that your:
  • Resume is clear and highlights each of your accomplishments
  • Essay is readable and tells us why you want to be journalists
  • Recommendations highlight your strengths
  • Package is complete
  • Transcript is current and an official copy
Remember: Read the application instructions carefully! Only completed and timely applications will be considered. Judges will also consider each student's degree of financial need.
