Tips for Saving Your Money

Housing

  • Share living costs with a roommate or two.
  • Reduce utility (water, heat, electricity) usage as much as possible.
  • Limit long-distance calls to off-peak hours.

Food

  • Limit costly foods such as gourmet items.
  • Clip coupons and check weekly ads for specials.
  • Make meals at home instead of eating out.
  • Don't buy more than you will use.

Transportation

  • Use public transportation. Many schools offer discounted bus passes.
  • Carpool - Save gas and money.
  • Shop around for the best insurance deal. You may be able to get a lower rate by selecting coverage with a higher deductible, or by remaining on your parents' policy.

Clothing

  • Watch for sales. Buy clothes at the end of the season when they are discounted.
  • Shop at resale, factory outlet and discount stores, but be sure to check that their prices are indeed lower than retail.

Cellular Phone

  • There are charges for both incoming and outgoing calls. You will not save your free airtime by having people call you.
  • Be aware of hidden charges such as roaming and early termination of service.
  • Keep track of your minutes and check your bill when it arrives so that you aren't charged for extra minutes at a higher rate.

Entertainment

  • Stay home with friends. Cook dinners together, rent movies, play a board game or just have a nice chat.
  • Use the library, it's free! Check out books, magazines, cd's or videos.
