Children, Youth, and Family Methods

Focuses on child welfare and family services intervention methods, social work in schools, services for early intervention, prevention and family support, child and adolescent mental health services, work with families of developmentally disabled, permanency planning, group work, family violence and child maltreatment, and intensive family preservation services.

Class description

The advanced practice elective SOCW 536E, Supervision and Leadership, is based on the premise that organizational effectiveness is dependent upon the quality of staff supervision. The course provides knowledge and skills involved in the supervisory role. It demonstrates the importance of concomitant leadership, characterized by support, motivation, and empowerment of social service staff. The course focuses on models of supervision, relationship building, and approaches to power and authority. The course affords the student an opportunity to develop and refine skills in risk management, team building, managing crisis situations, navigating the system, and evaluating staff performance. The course is presented in seminar format.
