Medieval Technology

Examines the nuts and bolts of medieval technology and urban life while exploring larger themes of the gendering of labor, the rebirth of cities, the uneasy relationship to Islamic civilization, and the destruction of the natural world.

Class description

The course will focus on Medieval Technology and Urban Life in Northern Italian cities, in particular Florence and Siena from AD 1000-1400. The emphasis in particular will be on the integration of primary sources with secondary materials.

Student learning goals

General method of instruction

Students actively participate in interpretation of primary sources. Some lectures.

Recommended preparation

Western or world Civ. covering ancient and medieval.

Class assignments and grading

1550 pages of reading, lots of writing.
