2-D Design and Contemporary Approaches in Art

Introduction to basic aspects of creating and understanding two-dimensional images and exploration of innovations and trends in contemporary art. Covers formal design elements and historic and cultural meaning. Includes studio projects, journal/drawing book, reading and discussion, and research project.

Class description

TCXG 382 A "Labor. Globalization, and Art": Through reading, studio art practice and the analysis of contemporary media and art, we will examine issues of work, labor, and the effects of globalization on our contemporary life. Students will make art (using photography, digital imagery, objects, puppetry and other mediums) about their own work experiences and learn about art history and contemporary art that depicts labor. We will also look at art projects that address issues of global justice.

General method of instruction

Individual assignments based on personal stories, readings and research .

Collaborative art project that explores the global journey of a commodity.

Group discussions.

Recommended preparation

Get a blank page journal, make notes about your work experiences, take photos, and collect images that refer to the topic.

Class assignments and grading

Research, collaboration, studio work (depending on the student the mediums will vary), discussion, writing and reading

All assignments are assessed according to the student's intention, mastery of visual grammar, risk taking (ability to stretch both formally and conceptually), participation in critiques, and attention to craft
