The World Stage

An investigation of western and non-western forms of staged performance from a historical, social, political, and cultural perspective. Subjects include the classical stage, medieval mystery plays, Jesuit theater, Noh and Kabuki theater, the Peking opera, Yiddish theater, Agit-Prop, the cabaret, the operatic gesamtkunstwerk, Avant-Garde theater, and Performance Art.

Class description

Students will have the opportunity to explore five play scripts through a variety of ways. Production techniques as well as textual analysis will be incorporated to give people with any level of theatrical experience a deeper understanding of the art form. This semester the focus will be on serious dramas; what is a tragedy? are all serious plays also tragic?
