This course builds on the basic knowledge that the students acquire in Psychology/Women Studies 357. A true seminar format is used in which each student teaches a topic related to women's psychology and/or biology to the class and all class members read an assigned article on each topic and participate in lecture/discussions on all topics.
Student learning goals
1. To develop specific expertise in a self-selected (and class approved) topic related to Psychobiology of Women through intensive library research and reading of published articles
2. To develop a clearer understanding of other topics related to Psychobiology of Women through participation in lecture/discussions on those topics by classmates
3. To extend oral communication skills through preparation and delivery of an extended lecture/discussion on your selected topic
4. To hone written communication skills through the preparation of a formal review paper covering selcted aspects of your research topic
General method of instruction
Each student begins by conducting in-depth library research on the topic of her/his choosing. After reading the research uncovered in the library search, the student selects that information she/he feels is critical to understanding the topic and organizes it into a detailed written outline and an extended oral presentation. A single article on the topic is selected for the remaining students to read prior to the presentation. Then, in an exercise designed to point out the differences in effective oral vs. written communication, the student prepares a formal 10 page review paper on their topic. Finally, since all students read at least one article and take part in extended lecture-discussions on each topic, all students are exposed to all topics (except their own) in the same way they would be in a traditional class setting.
Successful completion of Women 357 (or Psych 357) with a grade of 2.0 or above or permission of the instructor is required.

Course is graded on a point basis with 96% of the total pssible points required to earn a 4.0 in the class. The exact number of points varies by quarter. Typically 15% of the final grade is determined by the outline, 30% by the presentation, 30% by the paper, 20% by participation in other presentation/discussions and 10% for such work as Go-Post contributions and peer review of classmates' papers.
