Class description
TC 510 is a broad-based course in which we study the underlying concepts and the practical strategies and techniques for designing a broad range of print and online documents. We will consider a broad range of topics that pertain to documents and the creation of effective documents. Our definition of “document” is a broad one that encompasses print and the screen and various kind of interactivity.
The course topics consist of communication concepts and technologies; different media, genres, and formats; and both cognitive and social processes. The topics come from communication theory, media studies, rhetoric, computer science, psychology, and technical communication.
We will examine what is meant by “document” and how the role and function of documents has changed and is continuing to change. We will consider design issues in several important media and genres.
