Studies in Hearing Sciences and Disorders

Examines contemporary models and research paradigms in the area of hearing science and disorders. Topics include psychoacoustics; amplification; electrophysiological evaluation; physiological acoustics; and perceptual consequences of hearing loss.

Class description

The purpose of this course is to give you an overview of research in hearing science. The focus is on current "hot topics" in hearing research, such as genetics of hearing loss.

Student learning goals

General method of instruction

The course will be taught in a quasi-seminar format. For each meeting, a faculty member or guest expert will give an introductory lecture (~ 45 minutes) on the topic; the remainder of the session will be a discussion of the assigned papers, led by the student who has chosen that topic.

Recommended preparation

Each student is required to lead at least one session and write a paper on that topic (paper can be on an alternate topic with instructor approval). Class assignments and grading

Grading will be based on the following: Leading the discussion on the chosen topic (25%); active participation in class discussions (25%); term paper (50%).
