Management of Hearing Loss

Introduction to methods of communicative rehabilitation of person with hearing loss. Remediation principles of auditory and visual perception, amplification, communication strategies, and information counseling. Required for majors. Prerequisite: SPHSC 471; may not be repeated. Offered: WSp.

Class description

The unique handicapping effects of hearing loss. Characteristics and concerns of partially-hearing and Deaf communities. Principles of remediation of visual and auditory perception. Amplification and assistive technologies, communication strategies and informational counseling for those with hearing loss.

Student learning goals

General method of instruction

Lectures supplemented with Panel of persons with hearing loss and videos illustrating various cases and rehabilitative procedures. Class discussion is encouraged. Weekly laboratories with hands-on assignments with equipment and materials used in auditory rehabilitation.

Recommended preparation

Completion of basic audiometry and hearing disorders courses are prerequisite. Experience searching subjects on WWW and browsing list serves is desirable.

Class assignments and grading

Readings from required text and supplemental articles. Non-graded assignments in planning rehabilitative appointments. Three observations in the clinical setting.

Three equally weighted exams and laboratory assignments.
