Management of Hearing Loss

Introduction to methods of communicative rehabilitation of person with hearing loss. Remediation principles of auditory and visual perception, amplification, communication strategies, and information counseling. Required for majors. Prerequisite: SPHSC 471; may not be repeated. Offered: WSp.

Class description

Introductory course focusing on adult audiologic rehabilitation, including theory and practical applications. Will cover modes of communication, amplification, hearing assistive devices, cochlear implants, room acoustics, communication strategies, and informational counseling.

Student learning goals

General method of instruction

Lecture meets twice weekly with labs once per week. Lectures will consist of Powerpoint presentations & class discussion. Labs will provide opportunities to perform hands-on applications of topics covered in lecture.

Recommended preparation

Complete readings and assignments prior to lectures. Read lab assignments prior to labs - some items need to be completed before coming to lab.

Class assignments and grading

Brief written assignments based on outside readings. Assignments are due at the BEGINNING of class.

There will be three exams in addition to the final examination. Each exam will be equally weighted at 100 points. The lowest score of the four exams will be dropped from your grade. Examinations will cover readings, lectures, & lab materials. The Final examination will be comprehensive. All labs & observation must be completed before grade will be issued. Three exams (100 points each) = 300 points Assignments = 20 points Lab Practical = 80 points Total = 400 points
