Hearing Development

Description of the changes that occur in human hearing during development. Consideration of the possible explanations for early immaturity. Prerequisite: SPHSC 461; may not be repeated. Offered: A, even years.

Class description

How hearing changes during infancy and childhood. Some of the special problems involved in studying perception in infants and children. If there are differences between infants, for example, and adults in their performance on some test, how do we interpret those differences?

General method of instruction

Lecture, but with lots of discussion.

Recommended preparation

SPHSC 461, Introduction to Hearing Science, is a prerequisite.

Class assignments and grading

One midterm, one paper on hearing development on a topic of the student's choosing

40% midterm, 50% paper, 10% participation in discussion
