Speech, Language, and the Brain

Reviews the major neurobehavioral disorders associated with brain dysfunction, including classical signs and symptoms associated with behavioral disorders of the brain (e.g., aphasia, agraphia, alexia, amnesia, apraxia, neglect, executive disorders, and dementia). Discusses the advanced in assessing, diagnosing, and treating these disorders and the brain mechanisms underlying these deficits. May not be repeated. Offered: W.

Student learning goals

Develop an understanding of how language develops in typically developing children from the first months of life.

Understand how research on early language development in typically developing children plays a role in understanding developmental language disorders.

Become familiar with several main theories of speech perception relevant to early language acquisition, bilingualism.

Become acquainted with methods for studying how the brain processes speech and language.

Gain a fundamental understanding of speech acoustics and develop a working knowledge of spectrograms and other tools for studying speech acoustics.

Learn how to glean information from research articles published in peer-reviewed journals and learn to use research databases for locating articles on a topic relevant to the course material .
