SPHSC 405
Seattle Campus
Principles and procedures for the diagnosis of speech and language disorders. Required for majors. Prerequisite: SPHSC 305. Offered: W.
Class description
Course Objectives: Develop an understanding of the process of assessment; learning how to give specific tests is not a goal for this class. Demonstrate an ability to problem-solve using the scientific method. Demonstrate ability to formulate correct diagnostic conclusions. (Answers to lab quizzes are not in any book; they must be created via thinking.) Demonstrate ability to interpret common test scores.
Student learning goals
General method of instruction
The class meets twice weekly for lecture plus a two-hour lab. The labs are taught via the case method: students will meet clients (on video tape) during the week, analyze the client’s speech and language, and subsequently bring their data to the lab where we will draw conclusions and make recommendations. You finally get a chance to use all the information you have acquired in previous classes.
Recommended preparation
Since this is one of the last classes in the undergraduate curriculum sequence, it is assumed that students have had ALL of the prerequisites specified in the catalog. A great deal of integration of previously acquired information in speech and hearing sciences is required along with the ability to apply this information as we pursue the solutions to clinical problems in the labs.
Class assignments and grading
You will be very busy. There are several assignments: a paper; one multiple-choice test over factual material; one short answer exam; six lab assignments which require data collection, analysis, and thinking; two administrations of a standardized test battery to two children; one diagnostic observation. All assignments must be completed. There is not much in the way of required reading although you will find yourself reading portions of the course textbooks for information needed to solve the lab problems.
The course grade is based on the absolute percentage of earned points for each assigmnent. All assigmnents must be completed on time. Because of the case method used in the labs, makeups are not possible.
