Class description

Skill Lab: Enhancing Services and Outcomes for Child Welfare Involved LGBTQ Youth

This lab will explore LGBTQ (Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgender/Questioning) youth’s disproportionately high representation within the child welfare system and barriers to effective service provision. Participants will examine the ways in which systemic homophobia, transphobia, and heterosexism impact LGBTQ youth’s placement stability, permanency, and physical and emotional safety. Models, programming, and legal action taken for and by child welfare involved LGBTQ youth will be discussed and participants will become familiar with the legal rights of youth in state custody as well as placement options that exist in the regions in which they work. Emphasis will be placed upon advocating with and for young people across systems and settings.
