Topics in Russian Literature and Culture

Detailed study of a single author or a movement, theme, or short period in Russian literature or culture.

Class description

This course will examine the major works and movements of Russian drama and theatre in the “long” 19th century. From the neo-classical verse comedies and vaudevilles that dominated the early decades of the century, to the first acknowledged masterpieces of the Russian stage – “Gore ot uma” (1833) and “Revizor” (1836), to the dramas of Ostrovsky and Chekhov, 19th century Russian drama underwent enormous and rapid changes. In addition to the landmark works of the period by Griboedov, Gogol, Pushkin, and Lermontov, this course will also examine popular theatre, and operatic and cinematic adaptations of Russian drama. All readings and films are in Russian. Discussion, student presentations, and final papers will be in English.

Reading fluency in Russian is essential.

Class assignments and grading

Each student will lead discussion of one of the works to be read; active participation in discussions is essential. One long final paper (10-20 pp.) on a topic of the student's choosing.
