Class description
Winter 2002 The course will focus on the writings of those who perished in Stalin camps (Osip Mandelstam, Isaac Babel, Daniil Kharms), on the camp literature written by survivors (Varlam Shalamov, Eugenia Ginzburg, Alexander Solzhenitsyn), and literary memoirs and "requiems" created by those whose loved ones were taken away from them (Anna Akhmatova, Nadezhda Mandelstam). In addition, it will feature historical and archival materials from the era, including documentaries about the times (like the award-winning "Kolyma") and diaries of ordinary citizens.
