Examines the greatest authors and masterpieces of Russian literature, including Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, and Chekhov. All readings, discussions, and assignments are in English.
Class description
The course will focus on Russian and American fiction of one of the greatest 20th-century writers, VLADIMIR NABOKOV (1899-1977). Our readings will include two of his earlier novels -- Despair (1932; in English, 1966), and Invitation to a Beheading (1936; in English, 1959) -- and two of his later novels for which he is best known: Pnin and Lolita (both 1956). We will also study his autobiography, Speak, Memory (1951/1967) and read many of his magnificent short stories written throughout his life.

Class assignments and grading
All readings and discussions are in English. No pre-requisites. Course requirements will include a take-home midterm (5-7 pp) and a take-home final (8-11 pp). With the consent of the instructor, the take-home final can be replaced by a 10-15 pp research paper.
