PSYCH 305
Seattle Campus
An overview of major categories of psychopathology, including description and classification, theoretical models, and recent research on etiology and treatment. Prerequisite: 2.0 in PSYCH 202; 2.0 in PSYCH 209.
Class description
This course will include a broad survey of patterns of abnormal behavior. Although the focus will be on adult psychopathology, brief coverage of selected child and adolescent disorders will be included. The quarter will begin with an overview of important issues to consider when studying psychopathology. Examples include how we decide when a specific behavior pattern represents a disorder, and how research and treatment inform one another. The remainder and bulk of the course will focus on specific categories of behavior disorders. Theoretical explanations of each disorder will be considered, as will the projected course, characteristic symptoms, and preferred treatment approaches. A strong emphasis will be placed on empirically based assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of the disorders covered.
