Class description
Description: Students selected for the state intern program are assigned to state senators and representatives in Olympia during a regular legislative session. The program is open to all majors at the University who meet the eligibility requirements.

General method of instruction
To apply for the program, students should obtain information and an application from the Undergraduate Advising Office. Also see advisor for application deadlines.
Recommended preparation
Recommended background includes: 1. Junior, senior, or 5th year standing (90 credits or more prior to the internship quarter). 2. One year's attendance (36 credits) at the UW. 3. Letter of recommendation from a UW faculty who is able to assess the student's ability to adapt to the legislative arena. 4. A complete application file including: a) application form, b) letter of recommendation, c) current UW transcript. 5. One of the following courses is desirable: POL S 202 INTRO TO AMER POL; 353 U.S. CONGRESS; 382 STATE GOVERNMENT.
Class assignments and grading
Three assignments: 1) Keep a journal; 2) write a short "critical paper"; 3) write a longer, substantive research paper.
Grades for the academic part of the internship assigned on basis of quality of two assignments; for the internship part of the internship grades based upon evaluation by offices to which interns are assigned.
