Class description

Germany from 1945 to 2005: Political Transformation and Social Change This course will explore developments in German politics and society from the Post War era to the present day grand coalition. In order to understand today's 'German predicament' in controversial arenas such as welfare reform, immigration and economic restructuring, we will follow historical trajectories in East and West Germany up to unification and its aftermath. Analyzing the basic governance institutions and modes such as parliamentarism, federalism, and neo-corporatism, we will ask how state and society interact in a number of policy fields and assess the state of Germany under its second post-war grand coalition.
