Honors Seminar

Intensive and advanced studies in various aspects of political science. Open only to participants in the departmental Honors program.

Class description

Topic: Fair Trade in The World Economy Description: The problem of achieving fair labor standards has increased throughout the world, including the United States. Sweatshops, subcontractor violations, and exploitative and unsafe labor conditions are prevalent. Campaigns for fair trade constitute one response and labor codes—including monitoring mechanisms—are another. The seminar will explore the reasons for the violations of fair labor standards and consider proposed means to improve labor standards.

Text: Readings include: Joseph Stiglitz and Charlton, Fair Trade for All; Jagdash Bhagwati, In Defense of Globalization; Richard Freeman, America Works; Edna Bonacich and Jake Wilson, Getting the Goods; Gay Seidman, Beyond the Boycott.
