Class description
Description. This course explores the impact of war on legal protections for civil liberties in the United States. The course will first provide an introduction to the Bill of Rights and the role of the Supreme Court. Participants will then look at several historical episodes where war led to deprivations of civil liberties and/or to an expansion of rights, including the Civil War, World War I and II, the Cold War, and the current wars in the Middle East. Students will consider whether and how the Constitution and Supreme Court has affected changes in civil rights policies in wartime, and whether past events provide any guidance for the development of current policies.
