Theory of atomic structure and spectra; atomic and molecular beams; resonance techniques; atomic collisions; topics of current interest. Prerequisite: PHYS 519.
Class description
Survey of contemporary atomic physics including basic atomic structure, interaction with radiation, laser cooling and trapping, and special topics (such as Bose-Einstein condensates, cavity QED, frequency combs).

Lectures, homework sets, term paper and in-class presentation.
Recommended preparation
Graduate-level quantum mechanics.
Class assignments and grading
Weekly homework assignment. You will be required to prepare and deliver one 30 minute presentation on a relevant topic chosen in consultation with the instructor. You will also be required to submit a (4-page) term paper on this topic.
