Student learning goals

General method of instruction

- You will do a literature research of a topic in experimental or observational modern physics. - You will give a presentation on that topic in class. - I will discuss your talk with you at least one day before you give the presentation (dry run of the talk). - Prepare a research paper. - I will go with you through a draft of the paper before it will be submitted.

Recommended preparation

- Select a research topic. Perhaps you heard about a research topic but didnt have the time to follow up on it. This is a great opportunity to do so. Look through Scientific American or Physics Today, etc. to get ideas. I will also provide a list of possible topics. - Start your literature research early, schedule your talk early, write your paper early. (you will be very busy towards the end of the quarter with other course work.)

Class assignments and grading

- Attend all classes and participate in discussions. - Attend at least five Departmental Colloquia, prepare notes on the topic, presentation style. - Select a research topic and prepare a short (< 0.5 pages) proposal by the end of the second week - Give a 30min talk on your selected topic. - Prepare a paper in standard scientific form, 6+ pages on your selected topic.

Prepare a paper in standard scientific form, 6+ pages (40%) Give a 30min talk on your selected topic (25%)

75% will correspond to a grade of 3.5
