Nuclear and Elementary-Particle Physics

Survey of the principal phenomena of nuclear and elementary-particle physics. Prerequisite: PHYS 323; PHYS 325. Offered: Sp.

Class description

The particle families and interactions, conservation laws, recent discoveries, recent and current experiments, Standard Model, Neutrino Oscillations, future prospects. Phys. 323 not required.

Student learning goals

General method of instruction

Lectures plus weekly discussion of a research publication.

Recommended preparation

Quantum Mechanics (Physics 324, 325) is sufficient. Phys. 323 (E&M) is listed but is not needed (requirement is waived)

Class assignments and grading

Homework problems. One written or oral presentation.
