Systematic study of The Critique of Pure Reason.
Class description
The aim of this course is to understand and evaluate Kant's epistemological and metaphysical views and arguments, as presented in the Critique of Pure Reason, and also to decide what significance they have for contemporary philosophical concerns. Topics discussed will include: synthetic a priori knowledge, the metaphysical status of space and time, causal knowledge, transcendental idealism, the nature of the self, and (time permitting) arguments for the existence of God. Prerequisite: PHIL 322 is strongly recommended. No freshmen.

Class assignments and grading
There will be several short paper assignments and a cumulative take-home final exam. Philosophy graduate students (and others, with the instructor’s permission) may substitute a term paper for the final exam.
