Modern Philosophy

Examination of metaphysical and epistemological problems from the works of Descartes, Spinoza, Leibniz, Locke, Berkeley, Hume, and Kant.

Class description

A detailed survey of 17th and 18th century philosophy, focusing mainly on issues in metaphysics and epistemology. While some mention will be made of other figures, the discussion will focus heavily on the following seven philosophers: Descartes, Spinoza, and Leibniz (the Continental Rationalists); Locke, Berkeley, and Hume (the British Empiricists); and Kant. We will read substantial excerpts from the writings of each of these authors, attempting both to understand and to critically assess their main ideas and arguments. One mid-term exam, a final exam, and some homework/quizzes.
