The Word and the Empire: Reading Ottoman Literature

Approaches Ottoman literature through translations and scholarly articles in English. Evaluates this particular literary tradition as an imperial production, through an analysis and critical reading of course materials.

General method of instruction

Every week one lecture and one discussion sessions on reading material. Students will prepare eight two page response papers to the readings, or write a final paper.

Recommended preparation

Students shoudl do the readings and participate in the discussions.
