Studies in listening, with emphasis on the changing components of Western art music. Illustrated lectures, laboratory section meetings, and presentations by guest artists.
Class description
Music 120 aims to develop active listening skills for the basic analysis and appreciation of Western art music. It will introduce significant works, genres, and concepts in music history, focusing on aspects of musical style, composer biography, and socio-cultural context of music within the tradition of the Western classical canon.

General method of instruction
Lectures, weekly small group meetings.
Recommended preparation
No prerequisites. Knowledge of music notation is helpful but NOT assumed.
Class assignments and grading
Listening and written exams, short homework assignments, daily attendance in lecture and sections.
2 midterm exams, final exam, short assignments, class participation.
