Toby Saks
MUSIC 118
Seattle Campus

Elementary Music Theory

For nonmusic majors. For students who read music, have some performance experience, are familiar with scales, chords, intervals. Includes analysis of composition in various styles. Prerequisite: MUSIC 117.

Class description

Please note that Music 118 is designed for those who have already taken Music 117 and who want to study the fundamentals of harmony, rhythm and melody in order to compose in Major and minor keys. The course will include regular composition assignments and excercises. It is designed for non-music major students who are comfortable reading and writing music fairly fluently in both treble and bass clefs. This course uses actual music scores which need to be understood quickly. Therefore, students who have never read music while singing or playing an instrument will probably find this course too difficult. Students who took Music 117 but who do NOT read music or do not having experience singing or playing an instrument well are NOT encouraged to take this course.
