Research in the life, works, and times of composers in the United States from colonial days to the present. Prerequisite: MUHST 500.
Class description
Calling all Americanists!! Time-travel back to late 19th-century Boston and meet the colorful people, dedicated ensembles, and critical writers who helped to establish the tradition of art music in American life. This seminar will seek to place the performance and consumption of music by European and American composers within a web of context that includes the emigration of Germans to America, the Transcendentalists’ view of the role of music in society, the founding of American music criticism, and the ways in which music was performed differently than it is now.
