Special Topics in Music History

Topics vary each quarter. Prerequisite: 2.0 in MUHST 210; 2.0 in MUSIC 303; 2.0 in MUSIC 306.

Class description

The topic for Music History 497 in Winter quarter 2010 will be "American Musical Theater." Selected examples of the American musical on stage and screen will be studied in detail; issues of drama, music, and performance will inform the substance of our study.

General method of instruction

Class discussion; reading of, listening to, and viewing of assigned materials.

Recommended preparation

Strong interest in the subject matter and a personal commitment to learning.

Class assignments and grading

Reading; listening to recordings; short informal papers; one substantial paper assignment.
