Class description
The topic for MUHST 497A in Autumn 2013 will be "American Musical Theater." The topic for MUHST 497B in Autumn 2013 will be "Finding an American Voice." In 497A, we will consider stage and film musicals from the standpoints of music, drama, and dance, and consider how and why the musical has come to be regarded as an essential, and characteristically American, contribution to world culture. In 497B, we will study representative American poetry, visual art, and music, in an effort to understand why certain works are received as embodying "American" traits.
