Introduction to the History of Western Music II

Introduction to the critical study of Western music history, including representative composers, works, and genres, as well as significant concepts and issues. Baroque and Classical Periods. Prerequisite: MUSIC 203, MUSIC 206; either 3.0 in MUSIC 120 or minimum score of 80% on music history placement test. Offered: W.

Class description

This course introduces historical and conceptual frameworks that will help students understand musical pieces from the period 1600-1820. The focus is on representative works and musical styles, and on the rewards and frustrations of studying music in a historical context.

General method of instruction

Lectures illustrated with musical examples, video, slides, and other materials; discussion sections.

Recommended preparation

This course is limited to music majors, although auditors from other fields are welcome. Prerequisites: MUSIC 203/206; MUSIC 120 with a minimum grade of 3.0 OR Music History Placement Exam with a minimum score of 80%. Information on the Placement Exam is available from the School of Music Advising Office.

Class assignments and grading

Weekly listening and reading assignments, writing assignments every 2-3 weeks, midterm and final examinations.

Examinations 50%, Writing Assignments 50%.
