Europe in the Age of the Masses: 1870-1914

Impact of population increase and technological change on European society; stresses and strains in European life and outlook.

Class description

Impact of technological change, economic growth, imperialism, militarism, democracy on European society in the generation before the outbreak of the World War.

Class assignments and grading

There will be a ten page paper; lectures 4 days a week, on the fifth day discussion of reading assignment. Grades will be based on basis of paper and tests.

Midterm 20% Paper 40% Final Exam 40%
