Introduction to Law

Legal institutions and processes; law as a system of social thought and behavior and a frame of order within which rival claims are resolved and compromised; legal reasoning; law as a process of protecting and facilitating voluntary arrangements in a business society. Offered: AWSp.

Class description

This class is an introduction to fundamental legal concepts and teh structure and function of the legal system. This course will cover how ourlegal systems reflects and forms social values. We'll explore constitutional law, especially the Bill of Rights, dispute resolution, criminal law and procedure, torts and contracts.

Student learning goals

General method of instruction

Socratic - lecture/discusion. I show 2-3 videos. There will be one guest speaker. Some of the time student groups will meet in class to answer questions on the readings.

Recommended preparation

Read the text carefully. Buy a paperback legal dictionary and start your own list of legal terms and definitions.

Class assignments and grading

A midterm and final exam; several video quizzes, 6-8 group activities.

I grade on a curve. The Dean for the Undergraduate Program has said that the mean for a 200 level course should be set at about a 2.8.
