Research as a process from problem definition and formulation of questions to design, data collection, analysis, and reporting. Students recognize research opportunities, translate them into researchable frameworks, design research projects, and implement results in libraries and other information agencies. Prerequisite: LIS 500, which may be taken concurrently.
Class description
The course aims to engender an appreciation of the research process. Problem selection, study design, data collection, data analysis and interpretation are emphasized. The course focuses on the skills involved in designing and evaluating social science research, especially in the area of library and information science, and has two key aims. Firstly, students are encouraged to develop the conceptual and methodological resources needed to think and converse as researchers in organizations. Secondly, students develop a level of competence in research by designing and conducting a pilot research study.
