Introduction and overview of information systems, system architectures, and retrieval models. Emphasis given to the role of users in the design, development, and evaluation of information retrieval and database management systems. Prerequisite: LIS 500, which may be taken concurrently.
Class description
We will study how information is architected, how information is organized into systems and how information retrieval is accomplished with various architectures and systems.

General method of instruction
There is a weekly lecture and weekly assignments. A draft of the final writing project is required at mid-quarter.
Recommended preparation
The student will need to develop a writing project that focuses on a major theme of either (1) Information is real, (2) Information is perceptual or (3) Information is an art form.
Class assignments and grading
Weekly deliverables lead the student to engage various information resources. Most of these information resources are web based.
The weekly deliverables are each 5% of the course grade. The writing project is 55% of the course grade.
