History of Modern Japan

Political, social, economic, and cultural development of Japan from the late Tokugawa period to the present with special emphasis on the cultural impact of the West. Recommended: JSIS A 242. Offered: jointly with HSTAS 423.

Class description

This course traces the history of modern Japan from the opening of the country in the mid-19th century to World War II. Major themes are industrialization, the influence of the West, nationalism, imperialism, social change and the role of women, and the coming of the Pacific War. This is a W course
