Introduction to Kambun, a method of reading texts written in Chinese as classical Japanese. Prerequisite: permission of instructor.

Class description

Introduction to kanbun kundoku: diacritical symbols, grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension.

Student learning goals

Read kanbun texts in a variety of genres.

Prepare classical Japanese transliterations (kundoku) of kanbun texts.

Accurately translate kanbun into English.

General method of instruction

Discussion of meaning and grammar of assigned passages. Individual translation projects.

Recommended preparation

Japanese 471 (Introduction to Classical Japanese) or equivalent (i.e. knowledge of classical Japanese grammar). Graduate standing. Knowledge of 2000+ kanji and ability to use a Kan-Wa dictionary.

Class assignments and grading

Preparation of readings, discussion, examinations, translation project.
