Readings in Classical Japanese Literature I

Continued study of the classical language with a transition to reading literary works and understanding their cultural contexts. Prerequisite: JAPAN 471. Offered: W.

Class description

Readings of excerpts from classical Japanese literary texts in the original.

Student learning goals

Make the transition from decoding classical Japanese to reading Japanese.

Develop a deeper understanding of premodern Japanese literature, culture, society, and history.

Accurately translate classical Japanese into English.

General method of instruction

Discussion of the grammar and meaning of assigned texts.

Recommended preparation

JAPAN 471 (Introduction to Classical Japanese) or the equivalent. It is impossible to succeed in 472 without a firm grounding in classical Japanese grammar.

Class assignments and grading

Preparation, participation, quizzes, written examinations.
