Introduction to classical Japanese writing system, grammar, and vocabulary
Student learning goals
reach basic profiency in reading classical Japanese (bungo), the written language of Japan from earliest times until the nineteenth century and beyond;
understand the principles and structure of classical Japanese grammar and deepen their understanding of modern Japanese grammar;
acquire a basic vocabulary of classical Japanese words;
be able to use classical Japanese grammar charts;
be able to approximate classical Japanese pronunciation and understand premodern orthography.
General method of instruction
Lectures; analysis of grammar and meaning of passages by individual students
Recommended preparation
minimum grade of 2.5 in either JAPAN 313 or JAPAN 334 (Third-Year Japanese)
