Class description
This Special Topics course will be a seminar on the legal tradition in China. The goal of the class will be to explore how legal norms in China are different from those in the west, and whether the long history of legal activity in China can be called law. Assigned readings will include both analytical materials about Chinese law, and works of fiction. Some learning goals for the class will be 1. learning about Chinese law; 2. learning to talk about comparative legal orders; 3. Developing skills of analytical reading and writing abilities. There will be one short paper due during the quarter, and one longer paper due at the end of the quarter; grades will be based primarily on these papers, with an additional factor for class participation.
