Growth, income distribution, and economic development in less-developed countries today. Policies concerning trade, industrialization, the agricultural sector, human resources, and financing of development. Prerequisite: either ECON 201, GEOG 123 or SIS 123, any of which may be taken concurrently.
A general familiarity with the mixture of political and economic problems confronting developing countries. A sense of the range of different types of approaches tried by different countries. Some appreciation of the difficult problems faced by different countries facing quite individualized mixtures of assets and liabilities. An understanding of how countries have made successful transitions to higher levels of economic performance.

General method of instruction
Mixture of lecture and q&a in class. There will also be a group project (with groups usually of 4-5 students) that will be integral to the overall learning process.
A general familiarity with basic concepts in economics. 2-3 courses from the SIS 200 series.
Class assignments and grading
There will be 4-5 unannounced pop quizzes dealing with readings and lecture material. Hence students should be prepared to stay up with readings and attend all or most classes In addition to the group project noted above, there will be two exams--prelim and final. Both will involve a mixture of short and essay questions.
The specific proportions will be announced in the sylabus, but roughly 20% for the cumulative quizzes; 20-25% for the prelim; 25-30% for the final and 30% for the project (and the group project will have both an individual grade and a group grade).
