Information Structures Using XML

Introduces the concepts and methods used to analyze, store, manage, and present information and navigation. Equal weight given to understanding structures and implementing them. Topics include information analysis and organizational methods as well as XML and metadata concepts and application. Prerequisite: INFX 503.

Week 1 XML Overview and some fun with XML graphics - SVG

Week 2 XML Document Object Model (DOM)

Week 3 XML Definition Schemes, DTD and XSD

Week 4 XML Presentation; XSLT, XSL-FO

Week 5 XML Navigating and Query; XPath, XLink, XQuery

Week 6 PHP, XML, JSON, Other Data Formats/Protocols, Google Maps API, Programmable Web

Week 7 SOAP, WSDL, RESTful and Web Services

Week 8 XML Applications; RSS, RDF

Week 9 Deep Dives Twilio Call Management API and LastFM API

Week 10 The Nature of Information

Student learning goals

Conversational knowledge of XML and what it is used for

How to use XML to structure and use data through the web

Gain XML scripting skills in all XML languages
