Information Services and Resources

Concepts, processes, and skills of information involving creation, production, distribution, selection, collection, and services to facilitate access. Analysis of the information mediation process, including determining information needs; searching for, evaluation and presentation of appropriate results; and modalities for delivery of services.

Class description

This class will cover the skills and competencies necessary for individuals who design and provide information services. Typically, individuals will serve within an organization as the intermediary between end-users and systems for the creation, addition of value, and delivery of information resources. This will include:

* Identifying different user constituencies within an organization * Providing information rich environments full of resources that addresses the needs of those users * Developing and implementing services that add value to those resources * Responding to change in terms of user needs and evolving technology.

To accomplish this, we will cover the concepts, processes, and skills related to the lifecycle of information services as well as frameworks for the management of information services. This will include an analysis of:

* Information economics and service systems; * Information service management; * The information value chain; * Determination and analysis of information needs; * Effective design and delivery of services; * Examination of different modalities for delivery of services; * Management of service organizations

Student learning goals

Describe the role of services in the modern economy and the processes by which they can add value to information

Compare and contrast theories of service science and service management frameworks

Define the stages of the service lifecycle

Develop a proposal for a new information service that is designed to add value to information for a defined market

General method of instruction

Lecture, large group discussion, small group break out discussions, guest speakers.
